Frogwares is remaking the beloved 2006 Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened for the PS4 and PS5, and it will include at least one major Lovecraft reference.

Not long after news that work on a remake of Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened was in production, developer Frogwares released a brand-new trailer. While the video sheds a little bit of light on what players can expect, it also shows that the Lovecraft-inspired title is apparently going to have one of the author’s most famous characters in Cthulhu.

It should certainly come as no surprise that Frogwares is once again going to the Sherlock Holmes well. After all, the company didn’t even let the invasion of its home-country in Ukraine by Russian forces to stop it from releasing a Nintendo Switch port of Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter. The company is well known at this point as being the company that deals with the video game version of the famed detective. Now, after the initial announcement that the company was working on the remake, the new video shows off Frogwares’ work on a title first seen more than 15 years ago.

The brand-new trailer for Sherlock Homes: The Awakened shows off the rather spooky atmosphere that Holmes and his ever-present sidekick Dr. Watson are traveling through, while apparently being pursued by unnamed men with deadly intentions. As the video goes on, it appears the duo manages to slip away from their enemies, though that might have simply been because the detective and his partner are stumbling on something quite a bit darker and more evil.

As the trailer goes on, the main pursuer, who also happens to be wearing a sheriff’s badge, watches the pair row away into the open water and comments that they’ll be dead soon enough. This is also where the Lovecraft crossover comes in as the camera pans down under the boat Holmes and Watson are on as a shadowy, tentacled figure starts to come up at them from the deep. As the hulking figure continues rising, a famous line from The Call of Cthulhu is spoken by an offscreen voice saying, “do not fight his calling, for he shall end this dreaming world.”

It makes some sense why this is going to be the next entry in Frogwares’ long-running series, as Lovecraftian horror has seen more inclusion in video games in the last few years. The time period that the famed detective existed in just happens to also be the same period where Lovecraft’s work tended to take place.

There are, of course, some questions about the studio’s latest effort with Sherlock Holmes. At the very least, it will be interesting to see just how devoted to the original the remake is and where it departs from the first game.

Sherlock Holmes: The Awakened is due to hit the PS4 and PS5 sometime in 2023
