Cameras during the most recent episode of AEW Dynamite caught a fan’s sign calling back to WWF No Mercy during the perfect match.

While not as common as they once were, signs are still the norm for anyone tuning in to enjoy the weekly programming WWE or AEW currently air. The range of topics on the signs can vary from wrestlers to shouting out friends, but modern fans especially use the chance to highlight their love of video games or debating which is better, Final Fantasy 14 or Final Fantasy 6. However, one fan brought a sign to the most recent episode of AEW Dynamite referencing the popular classic WWF No Mercy and cameras caught the sign during the most fitting match on the show.

Among wrestling fans, 2000’s WWF No Mercy is widely considered one of the best professional wrestling games ever made and one of the best of the Monday Night Wars era, with its WCW equivalent being WCW vs. nWo: Revenge. The game allowed players to go through multiple storylines on the way to becoming a champion in the then-WWF, along with various other modes such as survival and a deep character creator for the time. It would also be the final WWF game released on the Nintendo 64, though it would go out with a bang as No Mercy would become one of the best-selling games in the platform’s history.

The game was shown some love by a fan in attendance at the August 3 edition of AEW Dynamite and was front-row facing the show’s hard camera, giving him the perfect spot to share his sign. His sign read “I played this match on No Mercy” but it wouldn’t be caught on camera until around halfway through the show. When cameras did see the sign, it was during a singles match between veterans and former WWE wrestlers Matt Hardy and Christian Cage.

As mentioned above, there may have been no more fitting match for the cameras to catch this sign during the show. Cage and Hardy were young stars on the rise in WWE when No Mercy was released, with the year 2000 being a breakout year for both men and the respective tag teams they were part of. Cage was teaming with Edge at the time while Hardy tagged with his brother, Jeff Hardy, and along with the Dudley Boyz the year saw them take part in the first triangle ladder match at WrestleMania 2000 and the first TLC match at that year’s SummerSlam.

Cage and Hardy aren’t the only members of the WWF No Mercy roster currently enjoying successful in-ring careers with AEW, either. The episode’s main event saw Chris Jericho taking on the Blackpool Combat Club’s Wheeler Yuta, with the winner facing Interim World Champion Jon Moxley on the next episode of Dynamite. At the time of the game’s release, though, Jericho was a fairly new addition to the WWF roster as he only debuted in 1999 after jumping ship from WCW.

WWF No Mercy is available on Nintendo 64.
